Preparing for the 8.1-8.3 Test

Step 1:  Complete all assigned problems and correct any mistakes

Step 2:  Stare (admire?) Mind Map for 5 minutes before sleep each night.

Step 3:  Retake 8.1-8.3 Review (Found to the right), or create your own practice test

Step 4:  Spend a little time each day doing problems

Step 5:  Arrive on test day knowing that you are prepared. Breathe, relax, and let your brain do the rest!

I have watched all of you work hard during class time.  Your collaboration and focus has been inspiring!
I'm very curious to see how flipping the class might affect overall test scores.  My bet is that they will rise!

Thank you for a wonderful beginning 2 weeks!

Recursive Sequences

Don't forget about recursive sequences from 8.1!  The original assignment was to identify which sequences from problems 39-52 could be defined recursively, and then to do so.  I believe that the only applicable problems are 39, 40, 45, 46, 51, and 52.  Please take the time to complete this portion of the 8.1 assignment if you haven't already, and ask any remaining questions in class .See you Wednesday!

First Flipped Lesson

You can now access the 8.2 flipped lesson! (Just click on the link to the right.) It's short and to the point, and hopefully a great way to lead into our work in class tomorrow.  One of the goals of a flipped classroom is to offer core lessons online that enable students to succeed in the application aspect of the lesson during class time.

There will be time at the beginning of the class tomorrow to ask lingering 8.1 questions, as well as any clarifying questions from the online 8.2 lesson.  We will then have time to complete the 8.2 assignment in class.

I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

Welcome, Class of 2015!

I have received several emails wondering where the summer skills packet is located.  Having had a summer packet for my students last year and then not noticing a corresponding difference in their achievement level, led me to skip the whole thing this year.

I am hoping that Summer has been a time of curiosity, discovery, and relaxation for all of my new incoming honors students. My hope is that connections have been made, and that life has been enjoyed.  If not, there are still ten good days left to do so before school starts!

I look forward to meeting the best and brightest 11th grade math students that North has to offer!

See you on the 13th!

Wrapping Up the Semester

Check Infinite Campus.  All grades have been entered with the exception of the 2nd Limit test taken today.  Many students raised their first Limit test score with the Earnback.  If the second score was lower than the first, I counted the first.  If it was higher, I changed the score.  Remember the top possible score was a 27.

We only have three more new lessons to learn!!!!

Stay focused and keep pushing yourselves..

Many of your grades are going up!

Keep up the hard work all the way through the end!

For some reason, the blog is not letting me post the notes the normal way.

Here they are:

Preparing for the 1st Limit Test

To the right, you will find the link for the review we did in class on Monday.  Please remember that the test will cover the 1.1-1.3 assignments from the book, as well as Thursday's worksheet. Remember to plan for a way to prepare for the test, whether it is a big block of time Tuesday night devoted to Limits, or a regular diet of short 10-20 minute reviews from now until Wednesday morning. Good Luck!

Polar Earnback and MOML

The earnback polar test will be given on Thursday during lab (Happy Valentine's Day!).  If you scored below a 27/39 on the original test , you have the opportunity to earn back up to a 27/39 (a 70%).

Also, MOML is tomorrow during lab.  Sorry first block!  I had the MOML passes on the board with the date, but failed to mention it.  Please swing by and grab one before lab.

And one last thing... I uploaded today's parametric/ partial fraction decomposition notebook under Polar+ PFD

Please remember to record your homework progress on the doing doc.

Thanks!

Preparing for the Polar Test

Remember to finish all of your homework, create your own practice test and analyze your results, then visit during lab on Monday for any questions that may remain.  Also remember to include critical points when graphing polar conics (as we did with all of the polar graphs) to get full credit on the test.

After this test, we will be 7 classes away from starting Calculus!

Whoops! Doing Doc is now updated

Feel free to put the correct headings on the HW assignment for the Doing Doc if I ever forget again...

Assignment for Wed

Please check the Assignment Updates link for the review problems for 9.1 and 9.2.  We will be pushing our Conics Test to Tuesday.  Please also remember to contribute a New Year's Resolution.  I love the feel of a fresh start and the challenge of attempting to do something I haven't been able to do before. Even if I fail, I learn something about myself.  Self-knowledge is always a good thing.

Thanks for giving this resolution sharing a try.

Happy New Year!

I'm having fun on my first day back from break (yes, really), and am looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!  I've added a few new things to the blog.  Feel free to check out the 2013 resolutions doc and the sleep poll, and participate if you feel like it.  Enjoy your last day of break!

The Final Tomorrow

Please remember to make a 3x5 notecard to use for the final.  You may fill both sides.  Also, please remember that a graphing calculator will be allowed (I'll have the 84+ calculators in the cabinet).  I will repeat what I have been saying all semester before any test- if you can correctly do all assigned problems in a timely manner (and with understanding), then you should do well on the test.

A good goal would be to get through the packet once, then retake it again. (the packet and answers are on the right).

Study, eat, sleep.

See everyone in the morning!

Honors Projects and Stress

The honors projects are starting to roll in.  As in the past, I've decided to upload several of them.  Ryan's link can be found on the right.  He created a Kahn academy type video over an application of Pascal's triangle, and uploaded it to youtube.  It is very impressive!

Although no one is stressing over their honors project, a lot of us are feeling overwhelmed with all of the demands on us during this time of  year (finals!!).  We discussed in 2nd block some ways to overcome the feelings of stress and anxiety.  I'll try to recap our discussion (briefly, because I know that time is a precious commodity, especially now!).

1.  Stress and anxiety are not your friends.  The chemicals released in your brain from being in a stressed and anxious state are corrosive to your brain and will also allow your internal organs to have a greater protective layer (aka, increased belly fat).

2.  Both stress and anxiety limit your ability to think clearly.

3.  When it comes down to it, stress and anxiety stem from our belief that we know how something that is happening today will affect tomorrow.  Sometimes this is the case.  Most of the time though, our predictions and projections about the future turn out to be wrong.  (If we were able to correctly predict the future, then we would be set for life!)

4.  There is a way to push stress and anxiety out of our lives.

Regularly repeat something that you believe.  (For instance, "All will be well"  or "Things always seem to have a way of working out").  Immediately after that thought, remind yourself that you are doing everything that is in your control about the situation that is stressing you, then distract yourself from your distressing thoughts.  They are just thoughts. Walk away from them.

5.  Now, if you are NOT doing everything that is in your control about a situation, that is another story.  Many times we are excellent task avoiders because even starting the task seems daunting.  Get over it.  Task avoidance leads down a road that is undesirable.  Decide to spend 15 minutes starting whatever it is that you've been avoiding.  Dedicate yourself to taking daunting tasks on, one chunk at a time.

Okay.  That was not brief!

Happy last two weeks of school.

Remember to breathe.
