Rotated Conic Flipped Lesson

To the right, you will find the link for the flipped lesson.  I created a colorful 7 pages of notes.  Please note that the very short page 4 really should come after page 5 (whoops!).  Please scroll through the pdf slowly as you go through the lesson.  You may find it helpful to read the text aloud as you follow the notes and sample problem.  We will complete 5 problems in class that will be very similar to the sample problem, doing the first one together as a class. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday!

The End is Near

I wish our snow day would have been on a B day!  Although we have lost a day of instruction, everything will still be alright.  Really.  I have posted the Hyperbola notes to the right, in addition to the Hyperbola power point.  After finishing the 9.1 and 9.2 HW (and checking your answers), please review Hyperbolas. They won't be difficult to learn ,now that we have the concept of Conic Sections down.  In fact, they are very similar to Ellipses.

So, the plan is simple.

1.  Finish 9.1 and 9.2 HW and check answers.
2.  Watch/Study the Hyperbola power point (remember to download, then view as a slideshow) and Review       Notes.
3.  Come to class on Tuesday ready to ask 9.1 and 9.2 questions, and to work on 9.3 HW
4.  Thursday we will review Conics
5.  Monday we will test Conics

As far as the Final, please find the Final Review to the right.  (Since we are testing over Conics the class right before, they will not be a part of the Final).  A good idea might be to do a few problems from the packet starting today, and continue each following day.  We will not have a Final Review day because of the snow day, so Ms Carrier and I will be available right after school for an hour on Tuesday (for 1st block ) and on Thursday (for 4th block) to answer questions.

Also, a graphing calculator and a 3 x 5 note card (both sides) can be used on the Final!

Feel free to come by lab tomorrow for help.

See you in class on Tuesday!

Ellipse Flipped Lesson

Please click on the Ellipse link to the right.  The whole lesson should take between 25 - 30 minutes.  In class tomorrow, be prepared to ask me any lingering Parabola questions.  Sorry about the last 4 HW problems. It is necessary to know a theorem about the tangent line to a parabola to complete these.  I will explain in class. As far as the Ellipse flipped lesson, I will go straight to example problems, expecting that all students have viewed the power point (which includes a video).

See you in class tomorrow!

Flipped Lessons Are Back!

Please find the first Conic Section flipped lesson to the right.  View the Intro power point first, then before viewing the Parabola power point, please push file then download, so that you can view it correctly. It's only three slides long, but is more effectively used when viewed as a slideshow. The goal is for everyone to walk into class tomorrow and be able to answer the following questions:

1.  What is a Conic Section?
2.  What is different about a parabola when viewed as a Conic Section?
3.  What do a Circle and a Parabola have in common?

I'll add to the flipped lesson with a proof and three examples in class, followed by pod work on the 9.1 assignment.

I look forward to seeing everyone in class tomorrow!

Preparing for the 8.1-8.3 Test

Step 1:  Complete all assigned problems and correct any mistakes

Step 2:  Stare (admire?) Mind Map for 5 minutes before sleep each night.

Step 3:  Retake 8.1-8.3 Review (Found to the right), or create your own practice test

Step 4:  Spend a little time each day doing problems

Step 5:  Arrive on test day knowing that you are prepared. Breathe, relax, and let your brain do the rest!

I have watched all of you work hard during class time.  Your collaboration and focus has been inspiring!
I'm very curious to see how flipping the class might affect overall test scores.  My bet is that they will rise!

Thank you for a wonderful beginning 2 weeks!

Recursive Sequences

Don't forget about recursive sequences from 8.1!  The original assignment was to identify which sequences from problems 39-52 could be defined recursively, and then to do so.  I believe that the only applicable problems are 39, 40, 45, 46, 51, and 52.  Please take the time to complete this portion of the 8.1 assignment if you haven't already, and ask any remaining questions in class .See you Wednesday!

First Flipped Lesson

You can now access the 8.2 flipped lesson! (Just click on the link to the right.) It's short and to the point, and hopefully a great way to lead into our work in class tomorrow.  One of the goals of a flipped classroom is to offer core lessons online that enable students to succeed in the application aspect of the lesson during class time.

There will be time at the beginning of the class tomorrow to ask lingering 8.1 questions, as well as any clarifying questions from the online 8.2 lesson.  We will then have time to complete the 8.2 assignment in class.

I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!
